How to Find the Greater O'Hare Business Lawyer

You should know this

It doesn't matter whether your own a small business or a large one..., you're going to need to navigate some choppy waters and make some tough decisions. Even the most competent of business owners struggle to make the right legal decisions on their own. Smart businesspeople seek the counsel of experts when confronted with difficult decisions.

One of the most important outside experts a businessperson can trust is a lawyer. There is a great deal of legal regulation for businesses to understand, and having an experienced business lawyer on retainer is the only way to ensure that your business is doing so.

It should be noted, though, that not all business lawyers are created equal. Read on to figure out how to find the right business lawyer for your business.

Questions to Ask a Business Lawyer

1. "How Experienced Are You in Practicing Business Law?"

The first thing you'll want to know when speaking to a prospective business lawyer is his or her level of experience. In most cases, it's not wise to hire someone straight out of law school. In most cases you'll be better served by hiring someone with significant real-world experience.

Try to find a lawyer who has been practicing business law for at least several years, at least four or five. A lawyer who has successfully practiced for this long has demonstrated his or her competence and can represent you well

2. "What Do You Specialize In?"

Most business lawyers specialize in specific types of industries. While one lawyer may specialize in the tech industry, another lawyer may specialize in the manufacturing industry. It's wise to hire a lawyer who is well versed in your industry. The more knowledgeable your lawyer is of your industry and operating environment, the more he or she will be able to do for you.

3. "If I Hire You, Will You Be the Only Person Working with Me?"

Some lawyers handle everything on their own, working with you face-to-face every step of the way. Other lawyers have paralegals on hand to help with administrative tasks, and some even work as a team along with other outside lawyers.

Both types of lawyers can do good work. The type you choose has more to do with your comfort level, confidence, and chemistry with the legal team.

4. "Would You Go to Trial for Me if Necessary?"

For some business lawyers, going to trial is the last thing they want to do. Some will settle out of court, even if it means sacrificing your business interests in the process. You want to make sure that the lawyer you're hiring will go to court for you if necessary, or have litigator as part of his or her team.

5. "Will Any of Your Current Clients Cause a Conflict of Interest Involving Me?"

Something you need to keep in mind when interviewing prospective business lawyers is if they already represent any clients which relate to your business in some manner. If they do, conflicts of interest could arise. It's best to work with lawyers who have no conflicts of interest. In a large metropolitan area like Chicago, it's unlikely, but the question should be asked.

6. "What Are Your Fees?"

It's important that you don't hire a lawyer without first understanding his or her fees, and how those fees are incurred. Some lawyers may charge $400 an hour, while others may charge only $195 an hour. Know what you're getting into monetarily before signing any contracts.
